Buying and HTDV...Dont buy an extended warranty from the reseller
* It is almost always a sucker bet
* The resellers make almost no margin on the TV and ALL their margin on the warranty; theyll gouge you on the warranty price.
* If you insist on having an extended warranty, see if you can get it direct from the manufacturer post-purchase. For example, I got my Sony TV at Tweeter and they wanted $300 for an extra 3 years. I called Sony and they told me I could buy the exact same warranty direct from the Sony web site up to 1 year post-purchase for LESS THAN HALF the price. The caveat is you need to buy the set from an authorized reseller.

Eight Plasma TV Advantages Over LCD TV

By Bryan Gillin

When you're shopping for a new HDTV, the question that almost everyone faces is which is better, plasma television or LCD televisions? Unfortunately the answer is 'it depends'. LCD flat panel televisions work better in some locations (i.e. bright rooms), while flat plasma televisions have a number of advantages- for example clearer picture with fast moving action. Here are the top eight reasons to choose plasma:

Contrast (deeper blacks) - The ability to completely turn off a pixel as opposed to blocking light allows for deeper blacks on plasma. This makes colors appear more vivid and lifelike.

Viewing Angle - LCD televisions look best from directly in front. The picture can degrade as you move to the side; plasma televisions have a wider viewing angle, and make a better choice when there are several members in the family who watch together.

Fast moving scenes don't blur with the faster response time of plasma televisions, so if you're a sports fan and don't want to miss the details, plasma televisions are the best choice.

Some manufacturers offer zero bad pixel guarantees- read the fine print. If you shop carefully you can find a plasma TV with zero dead pixels.

Pixel response times are faster, and manufacturers have virtually eliminated phosphor lag (color remnant left by the varying decay time of the different chemical properties of the phosphor coating in plasma cells).

Color saturation - Plasma televisions can display millions of colors, and their finer controls on color saturation allows for a finer picture free from washout.

Price in larger units - Although they're getting less expensive, large screen LCDs are still more expensive than plasma.

Bigger Screens - Finally, if you're buying the truly large televisions, you have a better selection in plasma. For the biggest screens on the market, plasma is the only choice.

With a little careful analysis on your size requirements, viewing plans and budget, you can now confidently buy a plasma TV based on its strengths against LCD TV.

Buying and HTDV...Do not ever, under any circumstance let the store sell you HDMI cables. Dont even buy them from Walmart or other mega-chains which are normally cheap. You get charged 5X what they are worth. Buy them from Amazon (you can get a 6' cable for $7 online vs. $30 or more in the store).

It was not until the early 2000s that technology had progressed enough to deliver sufficient storage capacity and processing power to support compression algorithms powerful enough to make HDTV affordable for consumers and profitable for broadcasters and other programme makers. The main enabling factor was the transition from analog to digital TV standards. Digital compression methods such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 allow the bandwidth of a single analogue TV channel (6 MHz in the US) to carry up to 5 standard-definition or up to 2 high-definition digital TV channels instead. Most developed nations have plans in place for a transition to digital television, but not necessarily or exclusively HDTV; for example, on 17th February 2009, the US intends to terminate all full-power terrestrial analog broadcasting (although some smaller local stations have later deadlines), with both standard definition TV (SDTV) and HDTV being allowed.

Once you have your television set, you might need a cable operator that offers you digital cable service and HDTV comes as a part of their package. Chances are that your present Cable company wouldn't be providing that service. Since you have to get into a new contract with extra service you will surely have to pay more to your cable company now.
